Mosque Tour 2022 at Masjidul Hoolur

AIMG, in collaboration with The Centre for Islamic Studies (CIS), is committed to promoting peace and reconciliation through religious faith. The organization's Mosque Tours initiative is a powerful tool for achieving this goal. The tours invite people of different faiths to visit mosques and learn about the teachings and practices of Islam, thereby clearing misconceptions and fostering understanding. The latest Open Mosque Day held at Al Huloor Jumma Mosque in Anuradhapura Junction, Trincomalee was a great success, with over 700 people participating. The participants were treated to a tour of the mosque, a poster walkthrough clearing up misconceptions about Islam, free calligraphy of their names in Arabic script, traditional Muslim foods, and a henna corner for the ladies. The Mosque Tours initiative was first launched by CIS as a pilot program at Wekanda Jumma Mosque Colombo in 2014, and since then it has spread across the country to various cities including Colombo, Kandy, Beruwala, Akurana, Gampola, Anuradhapura, and Pottuvil. The first Open Mosque Day was held at Akbar Mosque, Kompannavidiya Slave Island in March 2017, marking a historic moment for Sri Lanka as a mosque was opened to the public for the first time. This year, AIMG and CIS plan to expand the Mosque Tours initiative to the southern, eastern, and northern parts of the country, including Aluthgama, Weligama, Vauniya, Jaffna, and Ampara. With each mosque tour, AIMG and CIS are helping to promote peace and reconciliation through religious faith, building bridges between communities and creating a more harmonious society.

Awareness walks World Suicide Prevention Day.

Suicide is a serious issue that affects people of all ages and backgrounds, but it is especially devastating among young people. AIMG, in collaboration with the Mental Health Unit Base Hospital in Kinniya and the divisional secretariat in Kinniya, recently held awareness walks to commemorate World Suicide Prevention Day. Our theme was #Wearereadytohelp #உதவநாம்தயார் and we encouraged everyone to take action in preventing suicide. The latest data from the World Health Organization (WHO) reveals that suicide is one of the leading causes of death for people aged 10-19, with almost 46,000 deaths every year. In Sri Lanka, suicide deaths reached 2,977 in 2020, which is 2.56% of total deaths. The age-adjusted death rate is 12.89 per 100,000 of the population, putting Sri Lanka at #42 in the world. At Suicide Prevention Sri Lanka, we understand the important role everyone plays in preventing suicide. We believe that together, we can make a difference by raising awareness and encouraging people to reach out for help when they are struggling. If the information shared in this message has raised any concerns, we encourage you to reach out for support. The Lifeline 1926 National Mental Health Helpline is available 24/7 for crisis support.
